Different types of skips available

There are many different types of skips, and it's not always clear which one you should choose. We have created this guide to help you decide on the best type of skip for your circumstances. There are three main types of bins that you can use:

‍Open top skips are the most popular. There are several different types available depending on the size you need and whether you want it to open at the top or at the side. It is worth noting that if you want your skip to be collected by a compactor, then your skip must be open at the top.

A Lidless bin is a good option if you don’t want to have a lorry collecting your waste. There are several different sizes available, including 4 yards and 6 yards bags (known as 6 yard builders skips).

‍Endless bin is the best option if you need a lot of waste to be cleared in one go. These bins are specially designed to fit on top of each other, so you can keep adding waste until it is full.

As a rough guide, you can expect the following from each skip size:

4 yard (3.6m³) skip – holds about 12 car tyres, or 20 black bags
6 yard (5.4m³) skip – holds about 20 car tyres, or 30 black bags
8 yard (7.2m³) skip – holds about 25 car tyres, or 40 black bags
10 yard (5m³) skip – holds about 35 car tyres, or 50 black bags
12 yard (6m³) skip – holds about 40 car tyres, or 60 black bags
14 yard (7m³) skip – holds about 50 car tyres, or 70 black bags
16 yard (8m³) skip – holds about 60 car tyres, or 80 black bags
18 yard (9m³) skip – holds about 70 car tyres, or 90 black bags
20 yard (10m³) skip – holds about 80 car tyres, or 100 black bags
25 yard (12m³) skip – holds about 100 car tyres, or 130 black bags
30 yard (15m³) skip – holds about 130 car tyres, or 160 black bags
40 yard (20m³) skip – holds about 180 car tyres, or 200 black bags
50 yard (25m³) skip – holds about 225 car tyres, or 270 black bags
60 yard (30m³) skip – holds about 270 car tyres, or 330 black bags

When will I need a licence?

Licences or skip hire permits are needed if you are hiring a skip, for domestic and commercial waste that is over 8 cubic yards in size. This is known as a ‘large’ skip. If you have smaller skips, then you don’t need to worry about licensing.
